An Update from Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy Buffett posted an update on Friday May 19th. He’s heading home to Sag Harbor on Saturday for some rest and recovery for his hospitalization. Then he will be heading to the Bahamas for a fishing trip with some old friends. Once he is in shape he will announce a new date for Charleston as well as some new shows. Buffett said “I think playing is as therapeutic for me as it is for fans to listen and sing along”.

  1. I have been following you since I was 13. You changed my life in Galveston when I first heard your music and I have been a lover of the ocean and your music ever since. Prayers for a complete and speedy recovery. As I taught my 4 year old granddaughter to say when we hit the beach, FINS UP!

  2. Get well soon, Jimmy! Consider heading up north to Alaska to fish, fly, and perhaps a show for your loyal Northern flock!

  3. Get well soon Jimmy. I’ve been a fan ever since seeing you perform in the movie FM, while I was the projectionist at the movie theater it was showing at. It has now been 45 years since then and I have been to many of your concerts in several cities and states, most recently in Phoenix, AZ in March, and last July in Pittsburgh, PA. Hoping to have more opportunities to do so.

  4. I lived in Pass Christian my freshman and sophomore years of high school. Jimmy was right down the beach. Just enjoyed the San Diego concert with co-Mom, Paula. We had the time of our lives even from the rafters at Snapdragon🌴🌴🌴. Be well, Jimmy and keep bringing the beach, sunshine and happy vibe.🌴🌴🌴🌴

  5. Got introduced to your music at Summer Camp. Our director was a real Hammock Dweller. He rewrote songs of yours to lyrics about mishaps and happenings during camp week.

  6. Cleveland ohio wishes to get well soon ol buddy. Seen you many times over the last 40+ years. Jacobs Fiels, Blossom Music Center and what great times at Buckeye Lake…im sure you remember the monsoon there 1 year. Keep on growing older but not up my friend.

A great group of friends and I started following you and the Coral Reefers in 1986.
Alpine Valley was our first concert. This venue and you’re concert still changes every summer for all of us. Road trips seeing you and the wonderful members of the band from Alpine Valley to Las Vegas and just about everywhere in-between. Wild and elaborate ideas we have come up with from venue to venue for tailgating have gotten bigger and better every year. One year a bar, with free Tequila next year that same bar and a pool filled with 150 gallons of water brought in by SUV. I guess what I’m trying to say is, thanks for being the Host of so many Summer 🏝️ time celebration’s! We Love you Jimmy, you are part of the family. We wish you a speedy recovery and back to what you do best! Can’t wait to see you in North Carolina soon.

    1. I’m in SC and would love to come tailgate with y’all!! I am harmless 69 yo hippie that loves some JB!! Met him in a bar in Charleston.

    2. The Best concert ever? I’d have to vote for the Jimmy Buffett concert held at the Miami Marine Stadium in 1985. We arrived on a Scarab Open Fisherman at Sunset. The sky was a combination of orange and magenta and blue. On the floating stage, Don Johnson introduced Jimmy and the Coral Reef Band. Besides from a brief rain ( which nobody minded) the night was magic…

      1. I to was at that same show at the Miami Marine Stadium in 1985. That was the very first time I saw Jimmy Buffett. Drove there with my girlfriend and some friends from Pembroke Pines.I live in NC now but I have seen Jimmy at least 20 times.

  12. GET WELL SOON JIMMY. MY COUSIN RANDY, YOUR
PILOT, INTRODUCED US YEARS AGO. ONE OF THE BEST DAYS EVER. TAKE CARE AND HAVE A BLAST
    FISHING AND RELAXING..

I’ve been following you since I was in highschool when Margaritaville came out! You’re music brought me so much happiness!! I passed it along to our kids & now our grandkids! The grandkids keep asking for the summer music!! I’ve enjoyed several of your concerts! Grateful for all of the happiness you bring to the world!! Take care and get well soon!! Growing older but not up!! 🤣🎸🌴🌊🎼🎶🍹

  15. Prayers going up for you my friend. It sounds like you have the perfect game plan. Please keep us posted. Sincerely,
    Maggie Baker/Davenport, Ia.

  16. If we weren’t all crazy we would all go insane. Get well soon. I am waiting for a sequel called “A pirate looks at 80.”

  17. I think it was the Volcano tour where I popped my parrot head cherry at the old Reunion Arena in Dallas TX…1987 I think. But it was your Living and Dying in 3/4 Time album that set the hook in me for life!

    1. I wish I had bumped into you when you lived here in New Orleans. I might have been a kid back then, but I hit the French Quarter most weekends during the summer. I was even in a Robbie Robertson music video he fikmed years ago in your restaurant, Margaritaville. I knew who he was, but I knew who you were better. Lol. You’re the Coral King, bruh. 😎👌🏖️🎶

  18. Get Well Soon Jimmy🩵💛🩷
    So 💚 your music!
Saw you in Hartford, CT many years ago.
    What a great concert.
Rest, relax, and get back 🎵🎶🎵🎶

  19. Mr Buffet in 1992 we were homeless trying to panhandle on the wall at the church next to Sloppy Joes on Duvall St.My wife was pregnant and you took us to Margaritaville before it opened and fed us a Cheeseburger in paradise and a margarita then we were escorted to your pool and tiki bar out back and partied with some of your friends.Till this day I wanna thank you.its a experience we will never forget

    1. Wow. 🙋🏼‍♀️ Hi! That is a really, really wonderful life experience you just shared. To have been in your situation and have Mr. Buffet offer up a meal and an evening with him and his friends in his tiki lounge, etc… I can only imagine. I would have been equally grateful, remembering that encounter forever, as you have. It must’ve felt so very good to enjoy that time with that fun (I imagine!) group. Thank you for sharing 🫶🏼🦜😍

  21. Sending you a shout-out and I’m very happy that you’re heading home and feeling better.

Inspired by you and your music!!!! One wish I have is to jam with you on stage at the beach.

    CLE CHAR HARRIS

  22. Happy you’re on the mend. You certainly deserve the time off. But I absolutely refuse to let you retire from touring! I was at your makeup concert at Alpine Valley last year. As always, it was a total blast. Looking forward to this year’s schedule. Remember no retiring!

  23. Saw you at Bellarmine College Louisville KY early 70’s The Great Filling Station Holdup and Commode Hugging Drunk were hits at the time with The Coral Reefer Band. Love and Peace

  24. Aloha Jimmy! You played a free concert at the u of Florida gators Halloween streakers ball in 1975. What a hoot- you’ve been in my life ever since then. my boyfriend husband looks a lot like you. He was always pointing that fact out to all. So much love to you and yours… thx for the great tunes and chill vibes. Super glad your Songs got recorded.

  25. When I saw you in college you had a cast on your leg . Get well soon.

  26. I have a six year old daughter and a three year old son, as well as a beautiful and long-suffering wife who has been listening to me sing your songs in the shower and to our children for nine years now.

I first heard your music at a seventh grade dance after a football game – cheeeseburger in paradise and margaritaville of course – but it wasn’t until I happened upon A Pirate Looks at Forty that I fell in love with your music.

I’ve been singing Pirate to my daughter since she was in my wife’s belly, and boy would she kick 🙂

I went looking for a new Buffet song for my son when he was en route, and chose He Went To Paris.

My daughter and my son, from the time they could barely talk, both went through long phases where every night their one request was “mother mother ocean” and then when I was finished and wanted to sing them a new one, they would invariably say “again” – which is how toddlers say “encore” – I had them both, before they could sing, make the mournful harmonica sound at the beginning of the song, and then I would softly sing it again to their never-ending delight.

Now they both ask for “He went to Paris” – and my boy (he learned to talk and sing later than our daughter) – my boy loudly belts out “he went to Paris!” With a declarative and joyful shout and then will loudly sing the last word of every line… he prepares for it during the first part of the line and the hits that word and note right well.

My daughter has a morbid fascination with “the war took his baby, bombs killed his lady and left him with only one eye. His body was battered, his whole world was shattered and all he could do was just cry” – she knows that part perfectly and sings it joyfully to my wife’s gentle consternation.

My daughter doesn’t sing the song perfectly, but i know she has the words down pat because she is quick to correct me if I make even the smallest mistake – last night I said “tears were falling” and she jumped in and said “daddy! It’s ‘a-falling!” 🙂

You have inspired me to start playing the guitar again because they love that the most –

And back before I was blessed with this family, I loved your cover of one of my favorite songs, Southern Cross – I used to play that for my dad back in college when I was playing a lot, and it was his favorite one – now the southern cross is only visible from the southern hemisphere, and we had never seen it together. He is a physician and we are men of God, and sixteen years ago he directly answered Jesus’s call to “go and tell the world” the Gospel, and he started taking the family on medical mission trips in lieu of family vacations, and one year my father and brother (now an ENT resident, then 16 years old) and I went to Malawi for a medical trip to the villagers in rural Malawi – one night we were sitting in the back of a huge crowd of people, after a long day of ministering to medical needs (my job was to play soccer with the kids so the parents could wait in line for much needed medical attention, so i was plumb tuckered every night) .. so we sat in the back of a crowd of people who were watching the Jesus film in Chichewan, their native language, and my dad nudged me and my brother and nodded to the sky. I followed his gaze and there was the unmistakable glittering glory of the Southern Cross.

We leaned back in our chairs and my father, brother and I quietly sang Southern Cross in a whispered rendition that left us with tears streaming down our faces.

Not one for fan letters, I like to write stuff that actually gets read, but the music of Jimmy Buffet has been like a sloop that crosses the path of my life in some of the deepest, richest moments I have been given.

To hold my little girl and hear her ask for mother mother ocean, out of the dozens and dozens of songs that I love to sing, and sing to her… to hear my boy happily and confidently shout “he went to Paris!” and then wait and say “so!” And then wait and say “on his own!” And on and on until he gets to the end and can shout “he went to Paris!” and then as soon as I’m done peacefully say “again” … I sing them amazing grace, and I sing them it is well with my soul, and I sing them all number of other wonderful songs, but they like yours the best.

The other night it was way too late for a song so I prayed with my daughter and got up to leave and my daughter said “he went to Paris!” And I heard my wife say “it’s late, that song’s like a novel” and I laid back down and snuggled my little girl and while I sang it, I thought what high praise that is for a songwriter.

Hemingway and Melville and Dickens and heck even the Word of God use pages and pages of beautiful and powerful words but he went to Paris takes a couple minutes to sing and it encompasses the richness of life, what Jesus in John 10:10 (I think) meant when He said “I have come that you may have life, and have it abundantly.”

I don’t know what kind of brush with mortality you had in the hospital, but I do know that I am 37, and my kids are very young, and I can tell you that you have achieved earthly immortality with the beauty of your music.

And from a relatively new father in central Alabama, comes a prayer for you that you have sought and found and received the easy yoke and the light burden of Jesus, who offers us Living Water that we can have eternal immortality in the grace of the Father.

I was supposed to be asleep by now, but I saw “update from Jimmy Buffet” pop up on my phone, and I wanted to see which way the wind was blowing, and see how your mains’ls were set, and now I’ve typed my way into an exhausted tomorrow (not all the fault of the update, I stayed up late catching up on the PGA Championship), but on my walk down the memory lane of my life and the impact of your music on me and the family members that I love, I couldn’t escape the beauty of those songs, the blessings of Jesus in this sinner’s life and the fervent hope that somewhere sometime on the swells of life that you have found the Jesus that loves you like He loves me.

I’m going to pop in my airpods and fall asleep listening to Pirate and Paris and Southern Cross and imagine that I’m on a boat under the stars gently rocking in the Gulf of Mexico. I can already feel the water on the hull.

  27. Get well soon Jimmy 😊. I have been to four of your concerts in Florida. They were the greatest of all of the concerts that I have ever seen. Get well soon and hope to see you soon.
    David Lewis.

  34. Having a brother 9 years older than me provided my earliest connection to you. One of my earliest memories is listening to your High Cumberland Jubilee and White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean albums! I was fortunate enough to attend a concert on Mud Island in Memphis around 1990…BEST CONCERT EVER!!! We sat front stage, on a blanket on the ground. It was the 1st, and only, concert I ever attended that I never saw a single fight, argument, or altercation. Just a big ol’ group of chill, singing along to every Off To See The Lizard song plus many of our other favs!

  35. Oh, and a quick follow up…I lost my brother in October 2022 but FINALLY got the pleasure of going to a Buffett concert with him in Little Rock, AR in 2019! He told me that the only Buffett concert he ever got to attend. I’m am so glad I got to go with him. I’m sure he has Changes in Latitudes playing up there as we speak. Love you and miss you bubba.😢

  36. The only music we listen to is your music on Sirius radio. It always puts me in a beachy and Island mode. Haven’t missed a show at Jones Beach in years. Like you said getting old isn’t for sissies. My husband had a major and while in rehab for a year we play your music and he seems to understand it..Wishing you a speedy recovery.

  37. I enjoy reading the tributes from those in their 60s. I’m 66. 30+Buffett shows since Havana Daydreamin. Still have the long sleeve T. My good fortune! Enjoy your healing in your way Jimmy. It was awesome to sea you at the interview w Chicago Tribune, post Wrigley, during. Escape to Margaritaville, in more ways than one. Looked for u at Oak Beach…then we staggered on down to Castaways. From Kalamazoo, but Pine Knob or Chicago have been my go twos. And yay Jacksonville 2021 after PK rain tailgate. Anyway, that’s my story. I dig reading the “Stories We Could Tell.” I laugh and cry! Lost my best parrothead friend, so, I move on. Love and Luck to you and yours JB, Reefers and refferettes. Looking forward to our next rendezvous. Keep well 🦜🌴🦈🎶🦜💕⛵😎

Perhaps good vibes really do emote universal! We made it through Cabin Fever, Thanx a million for that JB. I wish Lunch Could Last Forever, while on the Slow Boat to China. im confident the waters that surround you along with yiur determination and friends will help your healing. Take care, Love and Luck, all ways

  39. Jimmy – I hope you get to read all these great posts ! My unique story is seeing you play impromptu when you borrowed a guitar to play for for a group at the Bohemian Grove as you were a guest of Herman Woulk (Don’t Stop the Carnival)… I was probably the only person there who knew the lyrics to ‘12-volt man’ . At the after party I met Walter Cronkite which lead to me having lunch with him two weeks later in NY, where he told me the stories of you two sailing off of Nantucket together every year…

Been to 37 shows including singing Happy Birthday to your Mom with about 100 others at your Margaritaville in New Orleans…. But I thank you the most for leading me to a relationship w Walter Cronkite and getting to attend his memorial service in NY where you played ‘Son of a Sailor’ as a tribute along with music from Mickey Hart.

Thank you for the many years of Parrothead lifestyle!! You get well and back out there and I’ll fly my family and grandkids to wherever you play for as many “Trips around the Sun” we all still have 👍👍. Find up my friend !
