Surprised by "Hot Water"

Post by trojan_sixtyone »

I have to admit that I was never itching to buy this particular album, but last night I was studying for my impending cognitive science midterm (yikes!) and decided I was ready to expand my Buffett collection. So I direct my good ole MacBook to the music store in iTunes and start browsing to see what's going to blow my skirt up. After a while of looking I was torn between a few of the classics ("A1A", "Living and Dying", "WSCAAPC", etc) and things like "Last Mango" and "Banana Wind".

At this juncture of the evening I see "Hot Water" and remember a discussion on this board some time ago in which a BNer said that "'Hot Water' is the album only true Parrotheads own." I wasn't sure if that meant you'd have to be a die-hard to like it, or if it meant it was a diamond in the proverbial rough. So, being the daredevil I am, I clicked and passworded myself a digital copy of "Hot Water" (thanks CitiBank for your convenient credit card).

I knew going into it that songs like "Pre-You" and "Great Heart" would get lots of play on my iPod. Other than that, I didn't really know what to expect.

So I begin to play the album. I had prepared myself for the worst, and was pleasantly surprised with what I heard. There were lots of soulful, "funky" songs (particularly "Homemade Music" and a few others toward the beginning of the album), which are always favorites of mine. The more I listened to it, the more the album seemed to be a transitional album for Jimmy--there were lots of varying styles in the album and what I consider to be the start of the Modern Era Bubba. I believe that you can hear a hint of that transition in "Last Mango in Paris", but it's predominantly visible in "Hot Water" and "Off to See the Lizard" (which I was also surprised by when I liked it so much).

I'm not sure that "Hot Water" is going to overtake albums like "Fruitcakes", "Barometer Soup", and "CILCIA" for me, but I am definitely excited about some of this "new" music I've run across.

Anyone else share my sentiments about "Hot Water", or have any similar stories regarding it?

Hot Water was one of the last albums I finally purchased on CD....and then, honestly, I didn't play it very often. I popped it in one day on a whim and couldn't imagine WHY I'd left it on the shelf for so long.....
Bring Back the Magic, Smart Woman, That's What Living Means to Me....GREAT stuff. Pre-you is an awesome song and a phrase that has found it's way in to my vocabulary....
Hot Water is a GEM....and one of my favorite album covers!!

If you like "Great Heart" I STRONGLY recommend you find the Johnny Clegg version. It's the original and it's vastly superior in my humble opinion.

Same here. One day my girlfriend and I were looking through pictures and she found one of me and an ex of mine. She asked who it was and I just played the song for her. She smiled and simply said "okay" and that was it. She understood. That's the beauty of Jimmy Buffett's music.

Hot Water is a GEM....and one of my favorite album covers!!
I agree--I think it's typical fun JB! And he has good hops, too!

I never even realized it's a cover--it just sounds so Buffetty to me that it never crossed my mind.

Hot Water is actually one of my favorite albums, and I'm not ashamed to say it.

Prince of Tides and Living Is To Me are two of my top 20 Buffett songs of all time.

At the moment my favorite albums are Last Mango, Hot Water and Off to See the Lizard. There are songs on all three that touch my soul and move me.

Let see that is what, 3 or 4 Utah Parrotheads on BN now! Welcome.

To me, the few few songs on this album start off like a continuation of "Off To See The Lizard", then about five songs in, it takes a tropical turn for the rest of the album.
Pretty good imo.

Floridays was the transition album - he was starting to get away from that boxed chinsy over produced Nashville sound that's all over Riddles and Mango and getting back to a more acoustic (less digital, more 6 strings and skins) sound.

Hot Water is a fantastic album - he's never done one like it since. It's really a jazz album I think. It's one of his best albums because of the difference, because it's not the typical Buffett album. He was at war with MCA - look what he turned around and did! The digital sounding drum machine filled push button freaked Off To See The Lizard! It's got great songs on it, they just don't sound very good. For the most part. The production is way over the top with the trend for that time.

Hot Water is Jimmy's most underated album. If not the most then one of the highest. The other album I think is underated is Somewhere Over China - another beautiful album that's got that similar jazzy swagger to it. A lot of parrotheads just don't "get it" on that album. But they "get it" on Mango? I've never understood that. Hot Water and SOC are superb albums. They both sound to me like he's had enough with the blender and cheeseburger crap and it's time to do something different, a little more serious, with a little more devotion to the music and the songs and the melody and textures - about the smoke and burning wood smell coming from the beach fire, not the beer and burgers and drunks around the beach fire.

That's what Hot Water and Somewhere Over China are to me.
