Legendary singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett passed away on Friday aged 76, according to a statement published on his official website.

Buffett, who wrote and performed the 1977 hit song “Margaritaville,” founded a business empire including resorts, casinos, restaurants, retirement communities, and a radio station, amassing a personal fortune of $1 billion by June 2023, according to Forbes.

In a statement, his team said: “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs.

“He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

  11. The world lost a true talent and one of the greatest singer songwriters of all time. Jimmy had a huge influence on my life and love of music. His songs led me to experience many years exploring Islands in the Caribbean then Key West, and I am still living that beach lifestyle today. I was lucky enough to attend many of his live concerts and know most all of his songs by heart. Parrothead Nation will keep his music living forever. Fins up! and Sail on Bubba. 🥲🧂🍹🌴🥥

  15. I was just a kid in the 70’s the first time I heard a Jimmy Buffett song, Cheeseburger In Paradise. I have been a fan ever since and will continue to be. But it is a sad day for sure. Prayers for the family, friends, and all Parrotheads. Thank you for being different than the rest and better than the best, job well done.

  16. I loved JB like an Uncle…I am so sad I only saw him once in concert…I used to check out his records at my library growing up. I am heartbroken and I pray for him and his family at this time ❤️

  17. I was teaching and told my class I wanted to purchase tickets for one of his concerts in Kansas City. I told them I was going to buy tickets on the computer. I also told my class there were some things more important than teaching. RIP Jimmy- a devoted Parrot Head since 1979 when I heard your first song.

  18. Thanks Jimmy for all the wonderful memories over the years!
    It’s been a lovely cruise!

  19. I ,too have lost count of the concerts….but will never forget all the good times and great memories with his music playing in the back ground! gone too soon….Sail on !!

  20. I first saw Jimmy at “Mother Blues” a little hole in the wall club off Inwood Rd. in Dallas in 1976. Was instantly a fan, “Lets Get Drunk” was a crowd favorite and one of my favorites. First time I saw him in person was a Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, he was the opening act for the “Eagles” not sure the date but think it was 1979. Was a lawn person for years once Jimmy started putting Dallas on his Concert schedules. Jimmy was a month older than me to the day, and like the rest of the “Parrotheads” he was my friend and buddy. Jimmy you will be missed my friend and will be in my memories forever. RIP, brother Fair Winds and Full Sails!

  21. My heart is broken at this sad news. Your music will live on and will forever be a part of my life. Sail on, son of a sailor. I will see you at that great Parrot Head party in the sky!

  22. I was raised a parakeet and now a full fledged Parrothead. Jimmy’s music has always been my refuge. Every Sunday, my husband and I have our Cheeseburgers in our Paradise listening to Radio Margaritaville. I hope you finally found that Lost Shaker of Salt and you are enjoying your Cheeseburger in Paradise.. my Dad was there to welcome you to your new Particular Harbor. You will be missed, Jimmy, but you will live on in our hearts and minds. Thank you for your generosity and sharing your words with us. Rest Easy.

  23. Tonight, I will toast to you with an extra salted margarita and know that will be greatly missed by so many.
    Sail on Jimmy…

  24. What a sad day! Jimmy you are forever in our hearts! Thanks for the music and the memories.
The world is a lot less bright with out you!
    You were a class act!

  25. Wow! Since reading the devastating news this morning, it’s felt like there is a hole in my soul. Saw Jimmy 23 times since 1998, and never left a show disappointed. Favorite songs: “Growing Older, but not Up”, “Tin Cup Chalice”, “Love and Luck….. the list goes on. Sail on, Sailor – it was a hell of a ride!

  26. He brought joy to the world. The mention of his name, and the sound if his music will always bring a smile. And he will be missed.

  27. I’m broken hearted with Jimmy’s family, friends and fellow parrotheads. Very sad! Over time I will embrace the lifestyle I always lived but was so much more enhanced by Jimmy and the 30 + times we sang together. He started the Trop Rock venue so thanks to all the bands that make music accordingly. Who else could make country go tropical? The one and only JB! Have a margarita with my best friend, Tom, John and all others in heaven that left us too soon. I appreciate all of our journeys together. You leave an amazing legacy to so many worldwide!🌴🎶🦜🍸🍔

  28. Sincere Sympathies to Jimmy’s Family, Friends and all who loved him. He sure brought a lot of sunshine and happiness to a whole lot of people. Rest easy Jimmy.

  29. 1978. In a parking lot polishing the aluminum fuel tanks on a semi-truck, I heard my first JB song. I have been a fan ever since. Thank you for the magic, the light-hearted laughs, the soul-searching lyrics. I feel like I’ve lost a friend that I never met. You will be missed.

  30. But there’s this one particular harbour
So far but yet so near
Where I see the days as they fade away
    And finally disappear

RIP Jimmy. You will live on in your songs and in the hearts of those who loved you.

  31. Went to a show in 99 with a friend who had an extra ticket. I was instantly hooked. I have since been to roughly 30 shows since. Thanks for the good times Jimmy.

    1. I want to send extra thoughts to Mac, Nadirah, Tina, Mr Utley, Doyle, Robert, Mr Jim, Eric, John, Roger G. Peter Mayer. I can’t imagine what you must be feeling. You all have been a great family in all the shows I’ve seen…looked liked you were loving it! Thank you, take care…guess we’ll figure out how to move forward. Since my first JB concert in 1998 I never stopped. Sometimes twice in a yr. Yah, 2021, Pine Knob and Jacksonville. I appreciate your dedication to your friend and compadre! 🎶🦜🎶💞

  32. He’s somewhere on the ocean now
    A place he outta be
With one hand on the starboard rail
    He’s wavin’ back at me

  33. CMT has a great YouTube video. There will be an amazing tribute to such an honest, driven, fun loving man. If he could have done the concert scene 2023 he would have. He got us through Cabin Fever…for all of our Clubs, thank you, we must keep the mission going to give back!

    1. Gosh, from when the lawn section was cool, to center 5th row, 30 shows in the makin….I’ll take Door #3 every time. I got to sea JB in Chicago at an interview with the Chicago Tribune! I’ll never forget it. Waited all day once at Mville Navy Pier…before a show. Ahhh, the Stories we could tell. Keep posting my finfeiends. Peace be with your soul. I’m so very sad!

  34. Gosh, from when the lawn section was cool, to center 5th row, 30 shows in the makin….I’ll take Door #3 every time. I got to sea JB in Chicago at an interview with the Chicago Tribune! 35. I’m so sad, but so thankful for the memories…it was always the event of the summer to truck out to Deer Creek with my dad to see Jimmy and the Coral Reefers! I’ll miss him so much but will treasure the music forever…fins up, and sail on, sailor 💕

    1. Wouldn’t it be great if there will become a way to share our photos and stories. Lots and lots of tales from our experiences with Jimmy and the Reffers/ refferettes. My 34 yrs of episodes can bring a half smile today. Not just a concert, not just a band. Amazing author, funny person, dedicated to the Manitee, parrothead clubs required to do charity work, inspiration for so many positive changes. So, yah, if the internet was safe pictures and stories we could tell would crash the network! Try to find a smile. Don’t feed into the drama sites on YouTube! That crap pisses me off and Jimmy Buffett along w family doesn’t deserve that.

  36. I’ve been sobbing on and off for about 3 and a half hours now. Jimmy Buffett is the only celebrity I hoped to meet one day. I’ve been a fan of his since 1974 (Pre-Parrotheads!), and his music and his memory will live on in my heart until I’m gone.
Thank you, Jimmy, for sharing your many gifts with me through the years! My grown daughter has all of my vinyl albums, almost everyone you released over nearly 5 decades, and they are playing on her turntable for herself, her husband, and their three children today. Your music has been the backgound of our lives for decades, and it will continue to be! What a gift you were to the world!
    Rest in peace,
    Kimi Jo

    1. Let’s hope heaven is really like paradise and we do unite there or better yet. There’s a biblical phrase that says “I will walk among you again.” Like having an Angel over your shoulder. How many thousands have been blessed and will all ways be caresed in the spirit and soul that Jimmy Buffett, his band and family shared with us. It’s gonna hurt for awhile!

  37. Thank you Jimmy for hosting the best summer “family reunion costume BBQ” the past 3 decades of my life. Your shows, songs and stories have gotten me through those years and will continue for myself a many others forever. Sail On Sailor there will never be another.
