Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band played for an hour and a half on the beach at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast in Australia on Friday March 7th. Jimmy and the band played on stage at the Quiksilver Pro surfing event held on Queensland’s Gold Coast. The were joined on stage by 12 times world surfing champion Kelly Slater and 5 times woman’s champion Stephanie Gilmore. The crowd of about 1,000 people watched on while surfers took advantage of beautiful Australian summer conditions. (thanks to Greg and Cyndy for passing that along to us)

Does anyone know just why Jimmy was in Australia and why it was not “announced”? Last time he was here (in Sept ’12) he said he was planning a full tour for 2013 but nothing happened and now he sort of sneaks in unannounced, so I am somewhat confused

Jimmy is now associated with the ASP world tour, and was attending the Quiksilver Pro and Roxy pro surfing events at Snapper Rocks, with the band. The concert seemed to be called at very short notice, after several lay days when the surf was not suitable for competition, and appeared to only be announced on the surfing competition websites. I thought there would probably be only a few songs, but there was a full, very relaxed, 90 minute concert on the beach, for about 300 of us. Jimmy was joined by Stephanie Gilmore, women’s surfing champ, on Volcano, Kelly Slater on Pirates and both of them for Margaritaville. There are very good quality youtube clips of these songs around, probably shot by the TV team covering the surfing.
