Culebra is a small Caribbean island located about half way between Puerto Rico and St. Thomas. It is an island of spectacular beaches and coral reefs, excellent snorkeling and bone fishing, just enough rum shops and bars to keep you up till ten or eleven, and a local culture that’s like its location: somewhere between the Latin and the West Indian (merengue and soca are both very popular here). The following comes from the February 2002 issue of The Culebra Calendar, the island’s bilingual newspaper:
“JIMMY… WHO? Singer and songwriter Jimmy Buffett was in Culebra last month for some bone fishing. He even attended an annual Three-Kings Day party. And, guess what? No one even recognized him! Although this does not reflect upon Jimmy’s popularity, it does say a lot about the people of Culebra and their lifestyle.”
