Sail On Brooks Robinson

Post by big john »

A Baltimore Oriole for 23 years. 16 consecutive Gold Glove awards. 2 World Series championships.
His performance in the 1970 classic is the stuff of legends. I met him a few years ago and got his autograph and
posed for some pictures with him. A real gentleman.
THE GREATEST THIRD BASEMAN EVER!
Sail on number 5.

I still lived in NY during his entire career so I saw him on TV a lot when the Orioles played the Yankees. He was so good defensively I think he would have been a Hall of Fame player even if he was a lousy hitter. There are a lot of one dimensional players in the Hall because they could hit but defense is part of the game too.

So as a youngster (up to 10 I'll say) I tended to be a "front-runner" fan. Of course back in the day baseball's national TV games were limited, & of course they featured the BETTER teams the most, of which the Orioles were one. So of course those late 60's/early 70's I was an Orioles fan.
That group is still embedded in my mind today. Outfield of Buford, Blair & Frank Robinson. Brooks Robinson, Bellanger, Johnson & Boog Powell in the infield with Andy Etchebarren & Elrod Hendricks sharing the catching. Elite pitching featuring Palmer, Cuellar, McNally leading the way.

That '70 series Big John mentioned, Brooks was a human vacuum cleaner. Made so many diving stops & off balance throws it was incredible. Was just amazing!

Sail on Brooks!
