I think it was only a couple days after Jerry died that JB dedicated the show to Jerry.. the whole CRB wore tie dyes.
I think JB said Savannah was the one that got him into Dead music.

My only disagreement with the comments in this thread is the drugs vs drunks notion. poppy cock, balderdash, FALDEROL!! Don't try to pigeon-hole Dead heads OR Parrotheads.. can't be done.

Every time I saw the Dead, the audience would range from 3 year olds to 60 something Senators. HMMMmmm,, maybe that was a JB show! not sure.. I was drunk and tripping at both!

I'm just along for the ride. I remember the "touch heads" or trustafarians and I've been puked on a couple of times . . . You're going to find jerks wherever you go. If you are here for the music then we can get along, right? I just ran into some opposition when I tried to work Buffett into our dead tribute band. The Buffett fans seem to be much more open minded, curios! Like the avatar btw...

I remember being front row at Great Woods just after Jerry
passed away. Jimmy switched into a tie dye shirt and brought
the Dead's drummer, Bill Kreutzman(sp?), out to play drums
for Uncle John's Band. Jimmy turned around to face Bill
towards the end of the song and I read Bill's lips when he
said "Thank you Jimmy, this feels really good!". I remember
lighters everywhere and many people crying during the song.
It was a very special concert memory.

Wasn't there a 2 or 3 day festival somewhere (Buckeye Lake???) where the Grateful Dead played one day and then JB played the end of the festival?

Jimmy's mentioned the Dead playing someplace 2 days, then he followed them the next 2 days and by his second show he could look out in the crowd and tell who had been at all 4 shows. I forget where he said it was but I think it was in the south.

What makes Parrotheads cooler than Deadheads?

I don't know if they're cooler. . . . What I love is the Parrot/Deadheads. I've been fooling around with "Scarlet Begonias," and I think I might play it, because I'm a Deadhead. Before Jerry died, there was a weekend where we were at an outdoor venue in North Carolina. I think the Dead had played Thursday and Friday, and we played Saturday and Sunday. We did an afternoon show on Sunday, and I'll never forget looking out into the crowd. I could tell exactly who had been to all four shows. Jimmy mentioned Don Ho early in the evening and spoke about Garcia for one of the encore songs, Scarlet Begonias. If these are two of his music influences that is quite a pair! (Mental Image)
For the most part the shell crowd was not that intoxicated, no drinking in the park that surrounds the venue. Jimmy did mention something about being able to smell the maui crowd> maui waui that is. He told Jake that must be how he knows he's back in the states by the sweet aromas swirling above the crowd. . . Someone mentioned the ability of Parrot heads to keep a steady job and know where the next meal comes from, etc.. That is true for me back in the tour days, but not now. Am I older and wiser, yes, I think. Do I avoid things that might land me in jail, yes. That includes being able to drive home from the show, or spend the night in the parking lot. I think we can all get a long just fine.... Once in awhile you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right....

I didn't appreciate the Dead until Cowboy Junkies put a song on the Deadicated tribute cd. Hearing artists I knew cover the GD made it easier to step into their musical sea. I love what Jimmy does with the Dead covers and "Scarlet Begonias" was a highlight of the Hawaii show. The fact that I had drunk my weight in rum and the joints being passed all around me gave it a Dead Head atmosphere.

Yes, I like Jimmys arrangement of Scarlet. I've been waiting 5 years to see him play that and followed by Southern Cross made it even sweeter. I'm trying to incorporate One Particular Harbor into a Blue Sky(DBetts) > Franklins Tower jam our band does. We'll see how it goes tonight.... I miss Oahu, albeit I was on vacation and not working. Wife wants to pack up the kids and head on over, she thinks she got a job in haleiwa.

Moving to Hawaii was the smartest move I've ever made. Oahu is not a bad place with kids. Down in Hawaii Kai, you'd swear it was a little beach town in California right down to the Costco. That makes for an easy transition for families, I think.

We need more rock and roll out here so bring the band. If I hear another bad Sublime cover, I might run them over on my moped.

It wasn't a failure like some other music festivals have been (with deaths, horrible weather, etc.), but considering the enormous amount of money that went into it, the huge technical issues with the expo tents and so forth, it was a failure. It was a great idea with a poor execution strategy.

At least the music was good!

Hello. I couldn't help but comment, I have been playing GD music for years. Over the last 4 years JB has really started influencing me and has worked his way into our set list. So, if you are ever in Dallas come see us, The Gooney Byrds. I'm in Honolulu today waiting to see JB at the shell tomorrow next gig is 10/17 @ the green elephant Dallas. Working on a myspace site... It's funny, a lot of the Dead heads don't care for the Parrot heads and vice versa. Something about drunks and druggies don't mix. I'm trying to change all that , wish me luck!

I don't think it's the Drugs and Drink.. rather a lifestyle thing..
most of the Deadheads I met are not the type to hold down a job
and or pay rent,bills etc.. and that's fine..

most Parrotheads I know are more of the type to hold a job long term
and prefer to knw just where the next meal is comming from..

and then there is the meat issue..

Jimmy always say that "a Parrothead is a Deadhead with a credit card".

Woodstock. They had a huge setup that got caught in the wind (had to cut holes in the set pieces because they were blowing away in the wind), they had electrical issues, basically their woodstock was straight up awful.
