Robert Says Show Goes On

Post by parrotheadmike »

First, let me say that I am still very sad about losing Jimmy and this does not intend to be a discussion about any sort of replacement for him, because we all know that isn't possible. I just hadn't seen this interview with Robert Greenidge posted anywhere else, and aside from it being a good article, I thought a couple lines were notable:

https://trinidadexpress.com/features/lo ... 170df.html

“We are all in a sad moment now. Our leader is gone. We will all transition in the future and who knows maybe be with him again, but for now the show continues,” Greenidge added.

Greenidge vowed the Coral Reefer Band will continue to play the music of Jimmy Buffett for as long as they are able.

“Would he want the show to go? Absolutely! He would say, rock on!” Greenidge concluded emphatically.

I'd love to see this happen. The coral reefers have given this community so much joy and great music that I think they are more than capable of keeping the fun going for a few more years, assuming they all want to.

Thanks for sharing the article. Love that the CRB is planning to move forward as a band. Maybe Mac steps in as the front-man of sorts, in some one-off shows.

However, there is no replacing JB. It's not an ensemble crew like Queen or Journey, where you go hire a lead singer & move fwd. This is/was/always will be Jimmy Buffett. CRB is hand picked (great) musical talent that Jimmy put together over the years.

However they take things, plan to see em as solo, duets, or as the CRB!

I agree with this. I know some will not, as it's a tricky thing.

But Jimmy would've wanted them to play on, and us to enjoy that.

I found out about Jimmy's passing while I was staging a parade. I sat down on a curb and cried. I grabbed my best friend and pointed at my phone and she cried with me. Then we got up and marched in the parade, because that's what Jimmy would've wanted.

I found out that Jimmy died from Merkel Cell the next day when my dad texted me "guess I have something in common with Jimmy" while I was backstage during a live play production. Labor Day weekend is a busy weekend for me. Anyway, I had put my notes for my roles (I was an extra/support crew) on my phone and was waiting for my cue when it came through. So I saw it right away, as I had my phone out.

I had a moment, so I read it. Then I put my phone away, because my cue was coming up. I played/did nine roles/jobs in that play. I told my bestie (same one, who was also an extra - four of us did everything the main cast didn't) about the text and responded to it in between the first and second shows.

My dad has Merkel Cell Carcinoma. It sucks. Losing Jimmy to the same has been so hard. But the show must go on, and so do we.

I think in reality you're most apt to see various CRB members getting together playing JB music live....example Mac out with Eric. Pete out with his son Brendan, maybe Jim sits in...Etc. Utley is 76 so doubtful we'd see a string of Club Trini shows. I believe if you're expecting to see the CRB in tact going out with who they have or maybe adding an extra singer for string of dates....well odds are slim. Maybe they do a show or two or three....that I could see.
I think moreso Robert is just saying the guys with whomever they're sharing the stage with will ABSOLUTELY keep the JB music in the forefront.

Regardless, I'll take what I get from those guys if they choose to roll it out.

I certainly think there is high probability the CRB does do some shows together. Only a few have touring solo careers (Mac and Peter) and often Darken is with them when the each play in small clubs. The rest are not generally on tour and might still need to or want to work. I doubt we will hear any of their plans until after the new year other than the individual shows for Peter and Mac. There will also be some legal hurdles to jump over but I'm sure Jimmy had a plan in place on how the CRB name could be used and how his music gets used. You also can't discount the financial aspect of this too, collectively going out as the CRB band in some format either with or without a special guest is far more beneficial. And while some in the band are north of 70 many are not and might still want to and need to tour.

It will be interesting to see what happens with them but I don't think we will know for a while. But if/when they go out - I will certainly be there.

Thanks, pholks. I'll let my dad know you're pulling for him.

It's been 15 months since diagnosis. Currently doing ok...but no way to know how long that might last, as that's sadly how this one often goes. Merkel Cell is nasty, but at least there are options now. That's a pretty new thing, so all we can do is go one day at a time and hope for the best. As was said of Jimmy, the miracle was the four more years since diagnosis. Six months was the norm until very recently. I'll take all the time I can get.

Incidentally, my dad is 77, a former scuba diver and still avid skier. Bubbles up, phriends. Bubbles up.

In time it wouldn’t surprise me to see something similar to Dead and Company, where CRB members perform with other musicians.

I think it will be a version of the current CRB lineup touring but maybe not all of them with a new face or two mixed in like a Scotty Emerick or someone to do some of the vocals and guitar riffs. I am sure there are "things" to workout like legal and financial stuff with the band, Buffett's family, record and management company stuff too. But time is on their side to get all this settled if they want to get out in spring-summer 2024.

I can totally see a tour name looking like this.

"Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band"
Keep The Party Going Tour 2024
