If you could keep one cover song.

Ok I know this is wishful thinking, but a guy can hope. If Jimmy were to eliminate all cover songs from his set list, which one would you want him to keep. I'm going to go with southern cross. I still find myself enjoying it live.

I'm not sure what the other options are as there's no actual poll but how often does he play "Defying Gravity" or "Biloxi"? I'd take any of those over most everything else he covers these days.

Biloxi was the first one that came to my mind. But, I have never heard him perform it live. I also like MIssissippi You're On My Mind. Are they both Jesse Winchester songs??

Everybody's Talkin'

Honestly, I could never choose just one. I love Banana Republics and Duke's on Sunday, too.

I second Banana Republics. I don't even think of it as a cover anymore.

I forgot Biloxi and defying gravity are Jesse Winchester songs. I guess I was more thinking along the lines of all night long, brown eyed girl, Scarlett begonias, southern cross, etc... I just never considered the old studio stuff covers, but technically they are. I just appreciate the old songs he rarely plays even if they are covers.

Or yellow submarine and glory days.....horrible! I give him one pass on glory days, the version he played right after Clarence Clemons died.

That's what I mean when I say Buffett used to have more of a knack for making other people's songs his own. It's often been said of artists like Johnny Cash that once he covered your song it became his because of the indelible stamp he put on it. This is particularly true of "Hurt". Trent Reznor has even said that it's no longer his. I enjoy hearing Buffett cover Bruce Cockburn, John Hiatt, Stephen Bruton, Guy Clark, Mary Gauthier, Gillian Welch, etc but none of his versions surpass the original renditions. Hell, he's even lost his touch when covering Jesse Winchester. I love the fact that he continues to cover his work but his versions of "Defying Gravity" and "Biloxi" reign supreme over his versions of "Nothin' But A Breeze" and "Rhumba Man".

I have heard that Buffett cover bands have played Nautical Wheelers before. That makes it a cover song. Therefore, I would like to hear Jimmy do a cover of someone else's version of Nautical Wheelers.

I have what "I" consider to be a very funny response to that. Since this is, at worst, a PG-13 rated board and I'd like to continue being a part of the group, I'll refrain.

Southern Cross.

Glory Days (mostly because I just like the song, not because i think jimmy's cover of it is particularly good).

and i wouldn't be mad at all if he did Sweet Caroline at GW next month
