Re: You Had to Be There
I've picked this CD up at music stores for years, but yet never bought it........
I just figured I have most everything else that JB released, why do I want "old" recordings of the same songs I have? And the price (like all Buffett music) never seems to be "on sale".
After reading this thread maybe I need to finally add this one to my collection......

You Had To Be There is vintage live Buffett before the crass commercialism and the Parrothead phenomenon set in.Bfan53again wrote:I've picked this CD up at music stores for years, but yet never bought it........

Best live album. And also the one that got me listening to Buffett, thanks to my roommate's quirky taste in music.

OK, OK......you convinced me to get it!
I can hear the wife now: "You bought another Buffett CD?"
Maybe I can smuggle it in the house in my briefcase from work........

You all were right, this was vintage Buffett........makes you kind of wish he was still like that on stage, doesn't it?

Re: You Had to Be There
Yes it does. The banter and the musicianship is excellent. This way of performing lasted for a while but it seems it disappeared with Riddles In The Sand. One Particular Harbour was the last album of Buffett's inventive songwriting and attention to detail - the end of his very creative era.
You Had To Be There will never be matched by any other live album Jimmy does - unless he releases some archived live recordings from later tours, mainly the Volcano, Coconut Telegraph, Somewhere Over China and One Particular Harbour tours.

Re: You Had to Be There
Well, after reading this thread, I went online and bought "You Had to be There". After listening to it, I really wish I could have been there.

Re: You Had to Be There
First Jimmy album I ever bought, I bought the soundtrack to the movie FM for all the great artists on it & thought "Gee I like that "Livingston Saturday Night" song, I'll have to buy a Jimmy Buffett album". What better place to start than a live album right?
I read a few years ago that "Cheeseburger in Paradise" was an extra track included on the CD version, I have searched high and low and have never seen a copy with it included, is this a myth? Would love to hear it.
Here's the cover of my vinyl LP, still in mint condition.

Re: You Had to Be There
I know Kenny Buttrey is the drummer on "You had to be there" but isn't that Bob Burns from the original Lynyrd Skynyrd line up (first on the left reading a magazine) on the back cover?

Re: You Had to Be There
Must be a myth as I've never heard of it before, nor have I ever seen a CD version of You Had To Be There that includes that particular track. In a way, I find it sort of refreshing that it wasn't included on You Had To Be There as it's been on every live album Buffett's released ever since then.Dino69 wrote:I read a few years ago that "Cheeseburger in Paradise" was an extra track included on the CD version, I have searched high and low and have never seen a copy with it included, is this a myth? I've never heard of that before either but if is indeed Bob Burns, he's not listed anywhere in the album credits.Dino69 wrote:I know Kenny Buttrey is the drummer on "You had to be there" but isn't that Bob Burns from the original Lynyrd Skynyrd line up (first on the left reading a magazine) on the back cover?
For some reason, the back cover artwork won't post here. To see it, click here.
