Darlene Love on Letterman

Post by chippewa »

For you night owls, Darlene Love returns for her annual visit to the Late Show Friday, singing "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)". Always one of my highlights of the Holiday season, this marks somewhere around 20 years that she'll perform the song. And that woman can flat-out sing.

She should be the last guest, which would put her on around 12:25 EST.
Which also should be close to intermission time at Jimmy's Belly Up show. :D

Last year's performance

still gives me chills

watched the clip, and you are right... she does have some flat-out power in those pipes.

This has been a holiday tradition for my dad and I for as long as I can remember. I missed it last night because I was out with some friends I don't get to see often. But luckily my dad DVR'd it so we can watch it Christmas night.

It's such a well-produced event and Darlene Love is so incredibly talented (not to mention Paul Shaffer's incredible musical arranging abilities). It's magical year-in and year-out, and I'm glad Dave's still doing this.

U2's version of "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)" is also really, really good. Darlene is numero uno, though.

Her 2008 appearance on The Late Show will be Tuesday, Dec. 23rd. Her annual visit with David Letterman began in 1986, missing last year because of the writer's strike. :(

Jay Thomas is also on that night, tossing footballs to knock the meatball off the top of the Late Show tree. :D

I got the pleasure of attending a Letterman taping a few years ago and although I missed Darlene Love, I got to see Jay Thomas throw at the meatball (it was the year Letterman said a "hunting accident" forced him to throw footballs only behind his back, and he threw one behind the back in a perfect spiral and hit the meatball dead center on the first try). It was a hilarious and magical event for me!

(I also got to see Matt Damon and Fuel that night!)

Can't wait to see Darlene again this year...can anybody seen her in "Hairspray" on Broadway yet? I bet she's fantastic!
These moments we're left with, may we always remember, these moments are shared by few...

Hey, I can reuse last year's sticky note! :D

Darlene Love tonight, along with Alec Baldwin and, of course, Jay Thomas knocking the meatball off the tree!

some highlights from this week's Late Show newsletter:
Q. Do you remember exactly how you became associated with David Letterman and "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)?"
A. Yes, because it's something that never happens. Paul Shaffer was playing Phil Spector in a play we were doing at the Bottom Line called "Leader of the Pack," and he invited Dave down to see the show. He came down and he loved it. A few days later on the show he tells Paul that we need to get Darlene Love down here to sing that Christmas song. He said, "That's the greatest Christmas song I've ever heard." That's how it started. I've only missed it one time and that's when I had to go to Europe and I was over there doing a play. Other than that, I've been on every year consecutively.

Q. Did you ever think it would become an annual tradition?
A. No, because when we did it the first time it was just Paul, the house band and me, not even any background singers. So we thought, "This is cute." And then every year they would call 2 or 3 days before they wanted me and I would say, "Okay, I'll come." Then they added 4 singers. Then, little by little by little we have come to this mass orchestra that we have now. Never in my wildest dreams did I believe that.

I met her once. When I was a kid, WIP in Philadelphia (which is now a sports talk station but used to be top 40) had an annual radiothon for charity and we used to go and volunteer.

The three celebrities at our table were Miss Spector, Melanie ("Brand New Key"), and Tim Reid ("WKRP in Cincinatti").

I don't remember how it came up, but I mentioned that my grandfather used to go camping with Hank Williams and his wife, Audrey, and that Williams worked for my grandfather briefly as a welder.

I remember her face lit up and she said how much she loved Hank Williams and started singing "Half as Much" right there at the table.

I think I was maybe thirteen or fourteen at the time and I had a crush on her for a little while after that. Mostly, I remember that she was very nice (so was Melanie, for that matter) and really seemed to enjoy meeting and talking to her fans.

CBS has posted a behind-the-scenes video, the making of Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), which features a mashup of all her Letterman appearances throughout the years.

Or see just the mashup.
