Louisville, Kentucky public radio station WFPK ran a promotion to determine “the 500 most popular performers of all time.” The results were played back in a countdown beginning the day after Christmas, concluding January 4.
As expected, the top 30 consisted of performers who are usually played on WFPK, which concentrates on jazz, folk-rock and country. The Beatles completed the list at number one.
Surprisingly – at least to them – Jimmy Buffett finished at 32. I can only recall hearing this station play Buffett only once (and that by request) in the last six months.
During the countdown, when they reached Buffett’s spot, they played six songs: Son of a Son of a Sailor, Changes in Latitude, The Weather is Here, I Heard I Was In Town, If the Phone Doesn’t Ring It’s Me, and Where’s the Party? It is interesting to note that Margaritaville and Come Monday were not included.
