Wonder why he didn't write it himself? I know it was 20 years ago but he covered a lot in A Pirate Looks at Fifty. Still one of my favorite books.

Well I'll be buying but I just can't understand how it can be an improvement on his first one when he turned 50. I've reread it a few times.

The only problems with that book is it's filled with too many parrothead witty sappy comments and, at a time when more information was available via the Coconut Telegraph, the 1990s part is weirdly thin.

Who's first one when who turned 50? This is Ryan White's second Buffett book?

This is what was throwing me off, "his first one when he turned 50". That was an autobiography but the way palmettopirate worded it was a bit confusing since he said "first one", which was not a biography.

I always thought the Steve Eng (God Rest his Soul) book was an excellent biography. There is no doubt in my mind that Jimmy used parts of that book as a reference.

I read it, really enjoyed it. Nothing earth shattering, and since JB didn't cooperate with the author, his quotes are pulled from other sources like interviews, articles, bootlegs, etc. Many of his associates such as Corcoran did participate, though, and they lend some great anecdotes. Good read.

I am waiting for Walter Isaacson to write his biography of Jimmy.
Or for Jimmy to do a real autobiography. Not a travel book filled with some back stories.

Well I'm up to chapter 8 - He Meets the Bear, Finally. I've either learned a few things I didn't know or been reminded of events I've forgotten in my old age. It is an interesting read though. I hope contributors' memories are accurate. You never know. Sometimes embellishment makes for a more fun story. And of course there's always the element of recalling things a little differently than they actually happened, hence one reason for the statute of limitations, which may have come in handy for some rascals in some stories from this book. Anyway, I'm taking my time taking it in, not even sure if I'll recall the beginning by the time I get to the end.

I finally finished the book. Never seeing the need to race through books I took my time. The truth is I've always been a slow reader, but it allows for stuff to sink in. Some of you more hard core fans may already know every iota of info in the book but writer Ryan White filled in lots of gaps for me. He was fortunate enough to wangle interviews with so many people close to jimmy, maybe Tom Corcoran being the most important.

But there is something White recognizes and gives us on page 283 that sums up what Jimmy did for the industry, the music we enjoy, and other artists;

Buffett had once been too country for New York and Los Angeles, and not country enough for Nashville. He'd tried to be something other than himself, and then given up and given his energies to the Parrot Heads. And then he became a genre unto himself. The industry finally came around.

It took quite a while, but Jimmy did indeed create the genre. Call it what you want; trop rock, Caribbean country, gulf & western. As White suggests, maybe the genre should be called Buffett. Or don't call it anything at all, but Jimmy hung tough and still made it happen. And other artists made out by jumping on the train. You know who they are; Chesney, Brown, and many more. But they all can thank Jimmy for paving the way for them. Oh there has always been some form of tropical music. Harry Belafonte comes to mind. But Jimmy put it in lights like nobody else.
