AFTER an absence of close to quarter of a century, American songwriter Jimmy Buffett finally made it back on to a Brisbane stage last night.

Crawled on, actually, getting the first of many laughs about his near-death experience falling from a stage in Sydney last year.

But the 65-year-old is in fine shape all that sea air does him no harm and even better spirits, taking this 1000-strong audience on two-hour ride of songs and jokes that goes down as easily as the subject of his most famous song. In fact, Margaritaville now sports a new verse about that experience.

This intimate outdoors gig under balmy Brisbane skies sold out in minutes, and while many of his Australian fans have travelled around the world to see him play, there's no doubt that his absence from this part of the world heightened the sense of occasion for his brightly-attired fans.

Buffett's long-time guitarist, Nashville songwriter and guitar hotshot Mac MacAnally, opened the night with some dazzling guitar fingerpicking before Buffett joined him for a set that featured most of the songs fans have loved these past 40 years, from Piece of Work through to He Went to Paris.

Buffett's post as Minister for Good Times and Hawaiian Shirts somewhat obscures his skills as a songwriter, but songs like Come Monday, Nautical Wheelers (that's the one with the line about "living and dying in 3/4 time") and Son of a Son of Sailor are constructed to stand all weathers, much like one of Jimmy's boats.

The between-song patter is just as entertaining as his music. Being this laidback isn't as easy as it looks, but with MacAnally and percussionist Eric Darken at his side these two hours seemed to go by in a flash. There was room for the risqué (Let's Get Drunk) and some well-chosen covers, including Crowded House's Weather With You and Crosby, Stills and Nash's Southern Cross.

And some good news for the many who missed out on tickets, with Buffett announcing from the stage he would be returning in March-April for a bigger tour with his full band.

No doubt that he played what they would want to hear. But I hoped he would switch it up, if not for us, then for them. Take the occasion of these special shows to do something out of the ordinary. Had I spent $0.01 more than a typical Buffett show for that setlist here, I'd feel cheated.

good patter chatter between songs,

THAT is what made it special.

Aside from the scaled back band, geographic location and Mac's songs, it doesn't sound much different from Bristow 2011.

From what I've seen, Eric Darken played percussion.

Two of the songs Grapefruit Juicyfruit and In The City have not been performed on the Lagoon Tour so far. Still I hope RM broadcasts one or both of these acoustic shows.

As Surf Pirate said, we in Oz have seen Buffett play two "mini-tours" in the last 2 years with a 23 year gap before that. (Of course I was out of the country for this mini-tour - typical)

While there is a parrothead following here it is not as fanatical as the US where you can see a performance a couple of times a year without too much difficulty.

So playing the "crowd favourites" is a given.

Keep in mind that the 2011 gigs in Sydney surprised the Buffett camp, Chuggy (the promoter) and the Sydney Opera House with the demand and the pace at which the shows sold out.

So Oz (and NZ for that matter) are a 'new' market which needs to be nurtured. If they decided to do all obscure and new stuff, the neophyte parrotheads and curious others would come away from the show with bad impressions and that would kill off the market quicker than a politician lying to the electorate to save his skin.

It is also a different music fan culture here in Oz. We aren't blessed with multiple tours of all sorts of artists, year in, year out. It costs a fortune to stage a tour to the antipodes and the ticket prices reflect this. With inbound tours being less common and less frequent than other places the expectation is for the shows to be all the well known stuff - and it works its arse off.

So to all those who sweat over set lists and try to read something into them I apologise for our expectations.

BTW after 30+ years in the music industry I am going to let you in on a secret. Set lists don't have any secret messages - they merely reflect what the artist thinks will work at that time in that place. That is why they morph ever so slightly over a long tour - things don't work and are dropped, local interest may get a song promoted, and in friendly territory or out of the spotlight gigs is when new songs get tried...

RM says they will play them "very soon" as long as someone remembered to hit the record button..

I decided to take a punt & turned up at The Palais at 11am and waited around the back on the off chance I could meet the great man when he turned up for his sound check.
At 3pm Mac turned up first, what a nice bloke - chatted, posed for a photo & got an autograph.
Couldn't believe I was the only one there, I thought for sure there'd be other people with the same idea.
About 30 minutes later Jimmy & Eric turned up. Jimmy got out of the car and came straight over to me. First impression, that mega watt smile! We chatted for about 10 minutes, posed for a photo, signed my LP cover of Songs you know by heart (my 8 year old picked out his LP as being the best for an autograph). I gave him a bottle of 2012 Tobacco Road Rose (I work at a winery) with a message on the bag thanking him for being "Hemingway with a six string".
No #1 item on my bucket list has now been crossed off, thanks Jimmy.

PS: I've seen Jimmy only twice (you'll find my post here somewhere about the infamous Hordern Pavilion show) now and it's actually been a cover song that’s really gotten people up out of their seats dancing the most - Brown eyed girl.

Giday, I was there Friday Night and believe me no one was disapointed it was a fantastic concert, I was there in 1990 to see Jimmy's Hot Water Tour
and in Sydney for the Stage Diving Tour , as described in my song parody, but this was the best.
