IWillPlayForGumbo wrote: March 2, 2025 1:08 pm I wondered about LAST MANGO CD release. I could've swore I had the original release with lyrics but when I looked it's the plaid reissue (or whatever it's called). Must've been someone else that had the original that I knew. I didn't see anything on discogs showing the lyrics version, not that it's a guarantee that it will be on there.
The original CD release has a solid red back and two catalog numbers MCAD-5600 JVC-431. The CD itself has a black ring on the out edge

A1A was reissued in 2016 along with Songs You Know by Heart. There are also two CD versions of the Living and Dying in 3/4 Time and Last Mango in Paris.
Oh. Well I wasn't paying attention in 2016.

Seems a bit strange to not include it anyway, doesn't it? Why not?

Will they ever do another pressing of "you had to be there"?

I ordered the new colored vinyl of Life On The Flip Side.

I did write the Mailboat records folks and requested some more issues. There were receptive, but ultimately MCA controls this not them. And we know MCA sucks. While the colored pressings are fun, in my opinion they are of extremely poor quality. I have some that skip on the first play.

But it would be fun to have:

Coconut Telegraph: exact same white label center as original pressing, Coconut Brown vinyl.

Floridays: Yellow Sunshine vinyl.

Off To See The Lizard: Iguana Green vinyl.

Agreed on all points here. Those colored editions would be awesome. I have all but one of the colored pressings (Fruitcakes was the only one I missed as it initially sold out quickly, so I opted for standard). I will say they are neat to own and listen to, but there was not much improvement (if at all) over most of the older LPs I have collected over the years.

I had debated investing $$ in vinyl-ripping hardware and software when the first few runs were announced so I could start building higher-quality audio files to my collection from them, but, things got pricey quick and I opted not to, once I started listening to the vinyl batches.

My colored vinyl of Living and Dying in 3/4 Time skips at the very beginning. I'll likely just get the standard black vinyl to replace it.

I believe this has been noted somewhere on here before, but I find the overdubbed harmonica solo on Remittance Man on the new Barometer Soup vinyl not ideal. Not only does it seem to replace one of Fingers' greatest studio contributions, but it also does not seem to fit with the slow, seafaring lilt of the song. However, I would be very interested to hear the story as to how that decision came about. Any ideas/info on that?

Vinyl ripping can be fun, but tedious. I have found the third or fourth play to be the best run for recording. The key is to get your vinyl extremely clean.

You can use any turntable with a usb. Then use audacity to record. Audacity is difficult to learn and use, for olds like me. But once you learn, it has some cool features that help you eliminate some ticks and pops.

I use the HD audio format. Save to a wave .wav at 44khz, 24k bps. Then you can covert to Apple Lossless .m4a like I do for use on an iPhone. You could also convert that .wav to any format you like if you don’t use Apple. Just make sure it is HD compatible. Wave files are good to record to, but too large for storage and use.

I store all my music in iTunes. When I import my ripped audio files from vinyl, I import it as a .wav, then do a conversion to m4a. Then I just delete the wav files out of iTunes. What’s cool is you can find the album art for the colored vinyl on Discogs and save it to your iTunes files for the ripped vinyl.

I had to come out of retirement for this thread….as I am very much looking forward to the Flip Side release and wanted to see what others were saying.

To piggyback on the Remittances Man … I am pretty sure the OG has Amy Lee on sax, when they recorded they must have had both Fingers and Lee lay down tracks. So the remix is Fingers vs Lee. I happen to like the harp over the sax but I am die hard Fingers so it would be hard for me to think otherwise! lol

Thank you! This is quite helpful and I should be able to give it a try.

Let me know if you need Audacity help. There are very good Audacity tutorials online. Just google, “how to rip vinyl records using Audacity” and you will find really good resources. [smilie=gt-happyup.gif]

Back in the day, I had a CD recorder audio component, very old-school, but I could burn both vinyl and cassette on to CDs. I had to babysit the process to separate the tracks, but it was a labor of love. Then, if needed, I could rip those CDs into audio .mp3 files on my computer. I did a lot of tape-to-CD stuff for an old CoB,O-ite who would send me tapes he needed to be digitized. Ah... the good old days!

MCA has zero control of any Mailboat Records releases.

MCA (UMG) controls Jimmy's 1973-1996 catalog.

Island Records (also UMG) controls those releases.

Mailboat controls all 1999-2023 releases.
