I hope these pressings are good. Too many modern vinyl pressings are crap nowadays, and they pop and crackle on the first play. And there is no amount of cleaning that will fix them. Hope these are quality. :-?
Have you received any updates on this or even on the second batch? All I heard was that the issue with the non-color pressing of Living and Dying in 3/4 Time was delaying my first batch order (that one and One Particular Harbour). I have also not received any updates on the second batch yet (supposed to be shipped this week), but many folks have been posting pics of receiving Banana Wind already.

That being said, I've followed up with Mailboat 3+ times over the past 2 weeks and have not received a response yet.

I am really hesitant to pull the trigger on the 3rd batch given the issues, delays, and radio silence on the previous batches. Thoughts? Thanks!
I did get Banana Wind about a week ago. I only ordered Banana Wind and Fruitcakes. I have all the others. As cool as they are I just could not justify have two copies for the coin.

I did order Songs from St Somewhere. When I got that it was missing the inside LP jacket. I emailed Mailboat and heard back the same day. They took care of the issue within 24hrs. I am surprised you are having issues.

With all that being said…..

Does anyone know how to tell if an LP is a 1st pressing?

I haven’t received any of mine, but that’s probably because I ordered all of them. I did receive an email that Fruitcakes was delayed. And the website says 7/12 for the second batch release.

To see what pressing an album is, I recommend using www.discogs.com. It is an online data base and marketplace of any and all kinds of media. There you can research the runout matrix and compare you copy to the pictures posted. Rather than focus on the very first pressing, I got first issue versions. Hard to tell which one was pressed first in a particular issue.

Update: And wouldn't you know, I just got a shipment notification for the second batch (Havana, White Sport Coat, Banana Wind) that should arrive Monday!

Still no update/email back on the first batch as of yet. But, at least I know the second batch is already in the mail.

Just ordered the third batch....crossing fingers.

They did a great job with these remasters. I listened to them as soon as they arrived Saturday, in stereo with my room EQ and processing bypassed on my receiver. This mode disables my subwoofer as well.

White Sportcoat sounds particularly fantastic, very well-balanced with a level of detail I’ve never heard on digital versions.

The jacket for Havana is fantastic. I only own four albums on physical media (CD), so getting to read the liner notes was a real treat.

Can’t wait for the first batch to arrive following the misprint delays.

Just received the second batch and so far sound is great. Listened to all of Banana Wind and side 1 of Havana Daydreamin'. Jackets are well done and the colorful vinyl looks great.

Only disappointment thus far is the lack of lyrics for Havana Daydreamin'.

Look forward to receiving the other sets as I ordered all of the new releases.

EDIT: Mailboat records replied via e-mail that Havana Daydreamin' does not include lyrics.

That is correct. The first edition does not have lyrics either. That’s wasn’t commonplace until the 80s, I don’t believe.

So far they seem to be nice editions. The mastering seems to be the same as the original ABC pressings. If they are different, I cannot tell it.

I am just going to archive my first pressings, even though some are mint, and play these new colored ones. These are fun!

That’s right! Barometer, Banana, and Fruitcakes all are doubles. Can’t beat that for fun!

I was going to say that I hope they do more of these, but all in all the pressings are all such terrible quality…after trying to make HD digital files of them, I just cannot get them clean and smooth.

I make HD files from my vinyl, and all of the colored pressings have snaps, crackles, pops and scratches that you simply cannot clean out. They are all ass, IMO. Fruitcakes in particular is a really poor pressing. The runouts have snaps on them!

I love the novelty of these and was hoping to play them instead of the originals. The original pressings, even VG+ copies, are all much better.

Shame on you, MCA! You could have done better!

Phinn wrote: May 16, 2024 12:31 pmI have always had mixed feelings of recordings that start in the digital world and are converted to analog for vinyl pressings. Basically anything recorded after 2000. I am trying to find info on if Fruitcakes, Banana Wind and Barometer Soup where recorded on tape or digital. The 90s we see a mixed bag as the industry started to go digital and music went away from tape. Buffett never seemed to shy away from tech so i can see him being early with the digital recordings. But my feelings is that they are all done on tape.
FRUITCAKES was most likely recorded on Pro Tools since the Compass Point had been refurbished with modern technology at the time. It was mixed at New River Studios in Fort Lauderdale.

Shrimp Boat Sound uses Pro Tools. SOUP and WIND were recorded at Shrimp Boat. SOUP was mixed at South Beach Studio in Miami WIND and mixed at Compass Point.

Digital recordings aren't converted to analog - a vinyl master is made from the file.

The biggest difference in regard to sound quality of vinyl vs digital is the mastering. Although it's getting better, for quite a while digital albums were mastered with no breathing room, aka brickwalled.

Vinyl can only be mastered to be so loud - otherwise it's unplayable. So vinyl will, generally, always sound better, although earlier CDs, like Nirvana's NEVERMIND, were mastered properly and I've listened to the LP on CD and a fresh vinyl and could not tell the difference.

Mastering matters.

Here's a possibly interesting aspect: if MCA truly remastered 7 albums and mastered the 1990s albums, why not reissue them on CD? Where's the deluxe treatment with extra tracks and radio edits?

MCA is really screwing up. Wonder if the people at UMG know what fools MCA are.

MCA has generally not given Jimmy's catalog the proper attention, with the only two exception's being the box set and MMIM.

Although the original CD releases of FLORIDAYS (of which there are two versions of, the original with the lyric sheet/notes, the second version with hardly anything) through CHRISTMAS ISLAND were well done, the secondary round of releases had any interior artwork in black and white.

Why they failed to make quality color vinyl issues is just one more aspect of MCA being a crappy label (with the money UMG has it's essentially an insult - it's rather obvious they only reissued and issued the select group of vinyl albums because Jimmy died). At least they got the regular pressings done decently.

Why they ignored A1A, originally released in December of 1974, remains a mystery. Otherwise the entire 1970 ABC catalog (sans the live album) was reissued and only one 1980s album.

When MCA got the ABC Records catalog in 1979 they reissued those albums (AWSCAAPC through YHTBT) with no regard to the original issues. The last original album release on vinyl (OFF TO SEE THE LIZARD) was atrocious.

A1A was reissued in 2016 along with Songs You Know by Heart. There are also two CD versions of the Living and Dying in 3/4 Time and Last Mango in Paris.

I wondered about LAST MANGO CD release. I could've swore I had the original release with lyrics but when I looked it's the plaid reissue (or whatever it's called). Must've been someone else that had the original that I knew. I didn't see anything on discogs showing the lyrics version, not that it's a guarantee that it will be on there.
