Sail on, Scott Carpenter

Post by SMLCHNG »

Scott Carpenter, the fourth U.S. astronaut to fly in space and the second to orbit the Earth, died Thursday at a Denver hospice. Carpenter’s wife, Patty, confirmed his death. Carpenter, 88, reportedly had recently suffered a stroke.

Those guys were my childhood heroes.
Even as an elementary school kid in the sixties,
I knew they had brass balls and the Right Stuff.

Sail on Scott.

May 24, 1962. I was in 5th grade.
I remember when his spacecraft splashed down in the ocean he'd missed his landing target by 250 miles, and everyone thought we'd lost an astronaut.
It was well over an hour later that a Navy helicopter found him in his life raft near his capsule.
Only John Glenn remains from the group of original Mercury 7 Astronauts. Every man and woman who put on a space suit and reached out to touch the hand of God were and are heroes of mine.
Sail on and fly high, Scott. :-(

actually, this news is what brought me back in tonight...

Many of us here were around when these brave men with the "right stuff" helped open a whole new reality to us as young Americans.
I only wish he could have hung around long enough to see the next men...and women..make that journey coming up in just few more years. He would be only honored and recognized even further, and he'll never be forgotten.

He did indeed have the right stuff.  Sail on, Commander, to the stars and beyond.

However, you have to wonder what John Glenn and the other surviving members of the Gemini and Apollo programs, our early pioneers in space, are thinking about our space program these days now that it is being controlled by bean counters instead of visionaries.

I remember whenever a rocket took off or a capsule splashed down, the TV's were rolled into the classrooms, and everyone in the entire school watched with baited breath and awe. By the time of the space shuttle, people just took the fact that brave men and women were risking their lives for the sake of discovery and honor for granted. Sail on, brave hero. And flights of angels sing you to your rest.
I'm just tryin to get by, being quiet and shy, in a world full of pushin and shove
