Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Post by pbans »

How in the name of all things holy have I NEVER listened to this band before???

I was in Salt Lake for an Amos Lee show last night (he was sick and didn't perform, but that's another story)....they were advertising for a Grace Potter show next week....uber cheap, so I picked up a ticket for next week and THEN came home to listen to them.....holy cow....what an amazing band, I am totally STOKED about seeing them live in a very intimate venue!

Anyway, if you've lived under the same rock I have and never listened to them....go youtube it and give them a listen!

Love, love, love this song....

The first time I saw them was 3 years ago. I'm going to see them again next month. I've told people if they're playin g anywhere near you, run, don't walk, to see them. My favorite song is Apologies and the first time I heard it, it blew me away. Grace did it solo on a Steinway grand piano.

I'm on the train now, I'm on my way home from seeing Todd Snider, but when I get home I'll have to post the picture of the venue they played in NY the first time I saw them.

Wow. Thanks! I must have been under that same rock.
I've spent the last hour watching videos. Awesome group.
They sound tight in concert and studio, but here's
yet another *spontaneous version* video.

This is the Allen Room in the Time Warner Center, where I saw Grace Potter & The Nocturnals in 2008.

Grace is pretty easy on the eyes too.

I've been telling people about GPN for years...Marilyn and I have been fans of hers since she was a local bar band here in Vermont. I personally prefer her older stuff, and think her best CD is her first one, "Original Soul", it was more bluesy than the newer stuff. She comes home to do an outdoor concert on the waterfront every summer, and normally does 3 or 4 shows over New Years. Since she was on VH1's last Divas show (she owned that show IMO) tickets for her shows are getting harder to get. BTW, VT Public television filmed a New Years concert of hers from around 2005...they still play it occasionally on our local PBS.....if you get a chance to watch it, check out the guy in the black leather jacket right in front of Grace's keyboard....he might look familiar. :D
Here's an awesome video of a cover they do....they filmed it a couple of summers ago at the waterfront show...

PA Parrot & I saw them 2 years ago at our local park during the free summer concert series. She had not yet made it to the "big time" but by the 2nd song we knew she was on her way. It was probably a week later when she played on the Today Show in NYC.

I would "like" their facebook page, but apparently facebook doesn't like me anymore and suspended my account.

Thanks to Larry and other folks mentioning them over the past couple of years I've been on the lookout for them but the closest I've gotten to one of their shows was seeing them on Letterman recently. I definitely liked what I heard and hope to see them the next time they pass through this part of North Cackalacky. On a somewhat related note, I can't help but mention current Nocturnals bassist Catherine Popper who was in the original line up of Ryan Adams & the Cardinals. This is Cat on the front cover of Jacksonville City Nights:

They play the Chicken Box every year. Seeing as how Nantucket is the greatest place in the world to be during the summer (you can see Jimmy Buffett's illegally docked yacht and the man himself park in handicap spots outside the town liquor store) and that Grace Potter kicks some serious as$ I would highly suggest seeing her out there. I will be.
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

Okay, I have to echo Larry's advice that if you get a chance to see them live....RUN, don't Walk....my god, what a show. Over three solid hours and I don't know how she does it because it's just power belting it out the entire time.....she did everything I love...apologies gave me goosebumps....things I never needed.....just an absolutely amazing show!
