What is a Parrothead?
I'm sorta new (well, REALLY new) to this board, so forgive me if this has been covered before, but what, in your opinion, qualifies one to be called a Parrothead?
Is a Parrothead simply a JB fan, one who buys the CDs/DVDs?
Or must a person necessarily have seen JB in concert at least once (or maybe multiple times) before earning the title of Parrothead?
I do consider myself a Parrothead, as I've been a fan of the man and his music for over 23 years, but I've yet to see him live (HORRORS!).
What do you consider the minimum qualifications to be to earn the title of Parrothead?

Re: What is a Parrothead?
1-You must own 90% of his catalog; at least one copy (bootleg or otherwise) of High Cumberland Jubilee (reissues count, but just barely); one of the two (?) Margaritaville compilation discs. The Yellow Album doesn't count, and is only included in your collection because "someone gave it to me."
2-You must have attended at least 5 concerts in 3 different states. One tailgate is mandatory.
3-You must have memorized all the facts in the BBB&B booklet, APLA50, and the Jimmy Buffett Scrapbook. You must also be able to discuss the errors in said books, and have documented proof as to why they're wrong.
You must also have read the Steve Eng book, but NEVER admit it to anyone 'cause it was a hatchet job!!!!!
4-You must not drink anything alcoholic not branded Margaritaville or Landshark. You must be willing to get into physical altercations defending the honor of said brands.
5-You must invent three ORIGINAL insults directed at Kenny Chesney.
6-All family vacations will now be taken in the following places: any Caribbean island; Tahiti; Key West; Biloxi; Cape Cod.
But thats all. Easy!!!!
Oh, forgot...you have to learn the secret handshake.

"The Parrothead
Found between the age of five years old and seventy years young, with a pleasant disposition for harmless chaos and visions of beaches, bars, boats and ballads; defining an Eden for half baked fruitcakes, tourists and dreamers.
The school teacher; sweet, innocent and caring, and living on flashbacks of Key West and New Orleans, with sympathy for the crazy woman on Caroline street.
The suburban teen who finds that Caribbean rhythms, gospel vocals, and stories of erupting volcanoes, old sailors and wind blown palm trees is far more inviting than "Radio Rock".
The hard working father of three reasons to care; who has little miss magic and understands why Delaney talks to statues; who never regrets the commitments and responsibilities cast upon him by unforseen fate; and harbors an annual summer day in his favorite floral shirt, prepared with pitchers of margarita?s in the back of the family trooper and a smiling wife to share a blanket at the Jimmy Buffett concert.
The Deadhead who honors a crowd of yuppies in need of carnival;
The old cheerleader squatting in the grass;
The goofy blonde strangers in skirts of grass;
The escaped, mid forties, moms and dads rolling grass.
Thousands upon thousands of court jester understudies hailing to the Lings Minstrel in dance and repute. The Parrot-Head, one and all, conjure and revel in a fantasy island of stories and indulgence found only between the Coast of Moderation and the Sea of Excess.

So I'm not being original, but I like these too...

What is a ParrotHead?
Parrotheads- (par-it-heds) n. Unique creatures found in colonies worldwide. Not particularly dangerous, they do occasionally engage in "Feeding Frenzies" that can be somewhat disconcerting to other, less social creatures. While they frequently wear very colorful and unorthodox clothing, Parrotheads have the innate ability to blend in with their environment when required and are sometimes hard to detect. The trained spotter should look for subtle clues like a coconut bra or an email address @ParrotHead.com
Parrothead: 1. noun: A rare specimen of non-conformists that is an apparently normal person that in reality is a restless dreamer and wild wanderer. Possessing a creative imagination and pure gypsy soul, their dress consists of delightful yet creative and comfortable clothing mainly of Colorful Caribbean design. Diet consist of Cheeseburgers and Margaritas.2. noun: A devotee of the music and life style of Jimmy Buffett.Jimmy Buffett, the originator of "Caribbean, drunk, rock-n-roll" A true sound of his own. Jimmy Buffett has found various outlets for his creativity; music and books.
We are not Parrot Heads because we are Jimmy Buffett fans.
We are Parrot Heads because:
* We love the ocean.
* We love our planet.
* We love to have fun.
We are Parrot Heads because:
* We are not afraid to be silly.
* We are not afraid to act foolish.
* We are not afraid of love.
We are Parrot Heads because:
* We like scantily clad members of our favorite sex
* We like playing in the sun with those same members.
* We like singing songs that say all of these things.
We are Parrot Heads because:
* We believe the best things in life cannot be bought.
* We believe sharing the best things make them better.
* We believe in the innate goodness in all of us.
We are Parrot Heads because:
* We know shared joy is increased.
* We know shared pain is lessened.
* We know a good friend has value beyond measure.
It just so happens, that Jimmy Buffett sings about all these things. So, we are not Parrot Heads because we are Jimmy Buffett fans, we are Jimmy Buffett fans because we are Parrot Heads!

What is a ParrotHead

Imagine an old chair perched upon the white shores of Key West, the expanse of the ocean rolling before it, and the sun, like a dim bulb in a paper lantern, sinking into the waves. Beside the chair lies a yellowed copy of some Hemingway novel, and a nearly empty margarita glass, tipped over and spilling small streams of tequila into the sand.
The owner of this chair is walking with an inebriated but well-practiced stride back toward a small cottage not far from the beach. His skin is the healthy brown of a leathern sailor, and there is a guitar slung over one shoulder. He is that famous pirate, 200 years too late, and another day past 40. He is Jimmy Buffett.
Jimmy Buffett is the Floridian singer/songwriter/author, who has been writing and playing songs since the 1970s, and is making a comeback today through the medium of country music.
You might have heard him on a couple of Alan Jackson's newer tracks, such as "Its Five-O-Clock Somewhere", or you might have caught his name in some of Kenny Chesney's songs. No doubt you have heard Buffet's famous single, "Margaritaville."
However, he's much more than a simple singer/songwriter. He has co-written a novel with Herman Wouk (famous author of "The Winds of War"), written the music for a Broadway musical ("Don't Stop the Carnival"), and has written a few good books of his own (such as "A Pirate Looks at Fifty").
He has encouraged the rebuilding of island folklore, and has even written his own folktales, such as "The Jolly Mon," a story about pirates, friendly dolphins, and a happy Caribbean singer by the name of "Jolly Mon."
Perhaps he is best known not as a lucky songwriter with a few good hits, nor as an author, Broadway composer, or folklorist, but as the emblem and Socratic father of the Parrothead lifestyle, a lifestyle sodden with a Whitmanesque joy, devoted to celebrating the mere sensation of life itself.
What are Parrotheads? To put it plainly, they are Jimmy Buffett fans, but there is much more to being a Parrothead than revering Buffett and collecting memorabilia.
Parrotheadism has its own, unique ideology, founded on the songs and the stories of its leader, Buffett, who claims that his own inspiration comes from romantic and adventurous writers like Ernest Hemingway. Buffett's songs range across various topics, from inane descriptions of cheeseburgers in Paradise, to slow and mellow ponderings about the unearthed mysteries of the world.
His commentary on human nature might read something like his song "Fruitcakes," which purports that there's "a little bit of fruitcake left in every one of us" (fruitcake referring to insanity).
According to Key West resident and former cocktail waitress Amy Morris, "[Parrotheads] are very happy people. They want to have a good time, and listen to good music. They wear a lot of weird hats and bad shirts, drink a lot of margaritas, and steal a lot of salt shakers."
They are island peoples, but they range in location from the waterless deserts of Wyoming, to the traffic-entrenched isle of Manhattan, to the snowy peaks of Denver.
The spirit of the island life does not always exist around them, but it breathes from within them; a vibrant, red pulse of mottled reggae beats and country licks contracts their margarita-drowned hearts, and gestates the island spirit upon which they thrive.
For a Parrothead, the cracking open of a novel or the wisp of an island song pulls them closer in toward their own nature, and away from the hum-drum world of work and traffic and its stagnant rhythms.
It pulls them into a carefree Carnival, or quiet reflection on a white shore. Surely, whether we've ever heard of Buffett or not, there is a little bit of Parrothead in every one of us.
(OK, I went thru and added the 2nd t to all the Buffet's!
Otherwise, pretty good! LOL at the 'they steal a lot of salt shakers!

What is a Parrothead?
Parrotheads Are Big and Getting Bigger
By Gwyn Guess, published Feb 28, 2007
All over the country Parrotheads have been meeting, partying and playing in bands for years. Don't know what a Parrothead is? Well, you must be under 30 then! Imagine a group of people all obsessed with one style of singing and a single singer. Then imagine them forming groups and clubs who actually get together to karaoke or trade trivia about the singer and his songs. Then imagine them having conventions all over the country, going on trips together, etc. Well there you have Parrotheads, all of them in love with Jimmy Buffett and his laid-back, island brand of singing with its easy rhythms, steel drums and smooth, acoustical background. But they're also in synch with his philosophy of helping each other and contributing to worthwhile charities all in the spirit of an island-style fun. It's sort of like the deadheads, who celebrate the Greatful Dead's music and their icon, Jerry Garcia, only these folks are really more of a social and benevolence club, I would say.
If you look in the web site for the directory there will be clubs listed from all over the country. Just clicking on any local organization will say a lot about the spirit behind these groups. For starters, I looked at the Chicago Parrotheads Chapter. They say they organize for fun, travel, companionship and just lots of laid-back tropical music. This particular group organizes campouts, trips on busses to Jimmy Buffett concerts, holiday parties and even a holiday tree decorating event at the Brookfield Zoo.
I was particularly delighted with a quote on their web site in the ten reasons one should join them. Here it is: # 6--"Because a tropical state of mind is a terrible thing to waste." How could I say it any better?
(added t's to this one too!

WWJBD or What is a Parrothead?
Inspired by CruiserMel’s comments on my Barometer Scoop post.
According to Jimmy Buffett: "Timothy B. Schmidt (Eagles bass player) was in the band, and we were playing the Timberwolf Ampitheatre outside of Cincinnati. People had already started wearing Hawaiian shirts to our shows, but we looked out at this Cincinnati crowd, and they were glaringly brilliant to the point where it got our attention immediately. I said "Look at that!" Then Schmidt says to me, "They look like Deadheads in tropical suits. They're like Parrot Heads!" He yelled to me in the middle of a song. So I immediately took the term and threw it over the microphone - the people identified themselves with the term from the get-go."
In that moment (6/22/1984), a cultural phenomenon was born.
The Head Parrot/Pirate, celebrated his 60th birthday on Christmas Day, 2006, and as of this writing finished the Party at the End of the World Summer tour in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday. Rumors are that he will re-visit the South Pacific this year (where he wrote One Particular Harbor). We are looking forward to a Texas date to reunite with phriends, but we're thinking of going to see him in Raleigh, too. There’s nothing like a phlocking before a JB show if you’ve never seen it (come early, but pace yourself *wink*)
A Parrothead, IMHO, is anyone who enjoys Jimmy Buffett music.
No Passport required, no concert experience necessary. If you enjoy life in the laid back lane, had the urge to run off to St. Somewhere, maybe had too much tequila (or not quite enough) or had your exploits told on the Coconut Internet (not that I’m one to deal in gossip) then you might be a Parrothead. <<< clicky ROTFL
I could go on and on, but I’m overdrawn at the Bank of Bad Habits
Good answer!

Re: What is a Parrothead?
OK, I'll answer your actual question now...bestseller92 wrote:I'm sorta new (well, REALLY new) to this board, so forgive me if this has been covered before, but what, in your opinion, qualifies one to be called a Parrothead?
...
What do you consider the minimum qualifications to be to earn the title of Parrothead?
In my opinion, there aren't qualifications to earn the title of parrothead... you either are one, or you're not. You either get it, or you don't. It's inherent.
I don't think you build up to it, rather, you discover it. And it feels really good!
To define it, I'd just say:
A parrothead is a person who has a passion for the music, words, and imagined or real lifestyle of Jimmy Buffett, and who enjoys sharing the feelings and experiences associated with such, with people who appreciate it.
(And what better place to do it, than BuffettNews.com?
