Flat Stanley (Updated list page 2)
Hey Moms and Dads...I'm trying to think of neat things to do with our kids this summer and I was wondering if anyone here at BN would like to participate in a Flat Stanley exchange this summer.
If you don't know how it works, The project was started in 1995 by Dale Hubert, a third-grade schoolteacher in London, Ontario, Canada. It is meant to facilitate letter-writing by schoolchildren to each other as they document what Flat Stanley has done with them. Dale Hubert received the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2001 for the Flat Stanley Project.
The Flat Stanley Project provides an opportunity for students to make connections with students of other member schools who've signed up with the project. Students begin by reading the book and becoming acquainted with the story. Then they make paper "Flat Stanleys" (or pictures of the Stanley Lambchop character) and keep a journal for a few days, documenting the places and activities in which Flat Stanley is involved. The Flat Stanley and the journal are mailed to other people who are asked to treat the figure as a visiting guest and add to his journal, then return them both after a period of time. The project has many similarities to the Travelling gnome prank except, of course, for the Flat Stanley Project's focus on literacy.
Students may find it fun to plot Flat Stanley's travels on maps and share the contents of the journal. Often, a Flat Stanley returns with a photo or postcard from his visit.
Has anyone ever done this in the past? I'm not sure about the logistics of the whole thing but with BNers all over the country, I thought it would be a great learning experience for our kids.

IT IS A GREAT PROJECT!!!
I've never done it where it gets mailed all over the country. But I have done it as a summer project. The student's did it themselves, they kept a journal of the adventures and either took pictures or drew their own pictures of the adventures with Flat Stanley in them!
Would be more than happy to help out with this though!!

you can do flat stanley or have a small stuffed animal travel around...
people take the animal different places and get their picture taken at landmarks, etc.....
then a post card comes back to your kid telling them about the adventure and then where they are off to next...
you could even start up a blog for the animal or flat stanley and pass the password around so they can blog about where they are at and what they have done at each location.

A couple of years ago, my wife's 3rd grade class did that. Sent out a cougar (stuffed animal, the school's mascot -- not Demi Moore) to an out-of-state school, who forwarded it to another school, etc. They received postcards, plotted them on a map, learned about new places. Kids got totally excited every time a new postcard came in the mail. I think she sent out a Beanie Baby animal, so it was just a buck or two to forward him around.txaggirl91 wrote:you can do flat stanley or have a small stuffed animal travel around...

There was a BN flat stanley...he went to Florida and was photographed @ several popular locations.
He subbed for Anna Lynn, Lone Palm Travel, who for some reason was unable to make the trip.
Gosh, I met her in Camden, she had a bum ankle, but I cannot for the life of me, recall her nic .... I hate when that happens...
edit: it eventually surfaces...NJPhinPhan ....

Re: Flat Stanley
Hey Mom's and Dad's..
I never did anything for this project and now it's become an assignment - and a race.
Our 4th grade daughter Katherine's class is using the Flat Stanley book to explore all 50 states. The first student whose Flat Stanley has been to all 50 states wins a prize(to be announced).
If you would like to host Katherine's Stanley, take a photo or two and write up a short story about Stanley's visit to your town, please PM me your name and address and we'll get Stanley to you asap!!!
Thanks,
Mary Kay and Katherine.

He doesn't have a passport yet, but if you don't think they will stop him at the border, Sure!! A little international geography might just get her some extra credit!!!Snowparrot wrote:Doesn't he want to visit Canada, the ancestral home of Flat Stanley?

Re: Flat Stanley
Flat Stanley can come to Colorado and stay with us! Victoria *totally* digs this sort of thing, and has done stuff like that with her classes, too.
He won't be climbing a 14-er or anything, but he's likely to do some chores, go to acting class, and see some musical theatre.
