2021 Baseball Thread

Post by LIPH »

I don't have anything to say but the results of this year's Hall of Fame vote are supposed to be announced at 6:00 tonight. Just getting a head start.

A couple of the talking heads on the MLB Network think there's a chance nobody gets elected this year.

The announcement was just made, nobody got the necessary 75% of the vote. Curt Schilling missed by 16 votes. Todd Helton was 7th with 44.9%.

I'm not surprised by the voting. I felt this was the weakest ballot in awhile.

I thought Schilling would have got in. I don't know if some of his off field actions kept him out.

Former NY Met (and a few other teams) Daniel Murphy announced his retirement today. I always liked him when he was with the Mets, really good hitter but he didn't really have a position. The Mets tried him at a few different positions before he finally wound up at 2nd base but he was average at best defensively.

Nolan Arenado is going to the Cardinals from the Rockies. I am NOT happy. (this is a Rockies/Cardinals house)... Ugh. (TV banner just said so, but websites are not confirming yet)....

He was a very good hitter. Should have been in the AL as a DH.

Dustin Pedroia announced his retirement today. I was never a Red Sox fan, but he was the type player anyone could root for.

Played the game hard. It's tough to come back from knee injuries , when you are his age. He will be a Red Sox HoFer. Up for debate on Baseball Hall of Fame. Do the Red Sox retire #15.

I'll always remember Dustin Pedroia's 5 for 5, 3 home run game in Denver against the Rockies in 2010. The Red Sox won 13-11 in extra innings and Pedroia hit the winning home run that broke the tie in the 10th inning.

The Atlantic League, an independent minor league with no affiliations with any major league teams, will be testing 2 new rules this season:
1. If, or more accurately when, a team removes its starting pitcher, they lose the DH for the rest of the game.
2. In the second half of the season they're moving the pitching rubber back 1 foot. It will be 61 ft. 6 in instead of 60 ft. 6 in. The theory is batters will get a better look at the ball leading to fewer strikeouts and more balls in play.

1. That is a pretty crazy rule. 2. Would that create more arm injuries?

I know I'm just a grouchy old man resistant to change, but what a bunch of hooey!
Seven inning double header games, starting the 10th inning with a runner on second, etc, etc......
Before you know it, they'll be deciding ties with penalty kicks.
