Avocadoes

Post by palmettopirate »

You women will have to read this at least twice. Men will get it the first time. Ladies, please be precise in how you give us instructions.

A lady asks her husband, "Honey will you go to the store for me and get a carton of milk?"

"Sure," the husband says.

The wife then says, "If they have avocadoes get three."

The husband responds, "Hmmm, OK."

The husband departs and shows up back at the house about 30 minutes later. He places a grocery bag on the counter.

The wife looks in the bag. Obviously puzzled she asks, "Why did you buy 3 cartons of milk?"

The husband replied, "Duh, they had avocadoes. Geez."
Every day you wake up you get another chance to do it right.

Well ladies I have to confess. It took me more than one look too. But after seeing that joke quite some time ago I'm careful to get clarification from my wife when she sends me on an errand.

Some years ago I was working on the island of Tinian in the Northern Mariana Islands. We were working on a casino/hotel project.

(Tinian's only other claim to fame is it where the Enola Gay took off from to bomb Hiroshima)

The workforce on the project came from all over the planet, I reckon every language group was represented, which presented some communications challenges.

One day, I was installed a security camera and need a power outlet installed. I grabbed the sparky responsible for that area and with him marked out the position.

I came back two days later and the power outlet was exactly where I had asked. You beauty, thunk I.

Plugged everything in, and nothing happened. I pulled the plate off the wall to check the wiring and measure the voltage.

Yup. you guessed it. He had installed the power outlet, but no cabling.

Clearly I should have asked for the cabling too. Precise communications are important.

LOL! That's a great story. I used to work with the nuclear power folks at Charleston Naval Shipyard. The people at NAVSEA learned early on to adopt a strict policy of "verbatim compliance". That simply means that we had extremely detailed refueling procedures and refueling instructions that were precise down to the gnats rump. We even had calibrated crimping tools. You've probably used those too. Anyway, these instructions including building the facilities to perform refueling evolutions. And I can tell you, no matter how much experience an electrician, machinist, pipefitter, or sheet metal worker had, they could find a way to deviate from engineering standards. BTW, that deviation is called malpractice, just like in the medical profession. But I'm betting you know that.
